Pastoral Letter

Bishop Baker has promulgated his pastoral letter "Called. Formed. Sent..." as a way for us to prepare for the Eucharistic Congress with our focus on Missionary Discipleship. The letter encourages us to examine how our parish communities call people to Jesus, make disciples, and how we are each sent to be missionaries of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Bishop Baker has asked parishes to set up three sessions where we study one of the three sections of the letter in each session. Beautifully designed and printed copies are available to use in your parish study for a free-will offering by contacting the Diocesan Office of the Chancellor at (205)838-8322. The books are printed both in English and Spanish in one piece.
When finished, provide all the names of those who joined in the study to Alex Kubik in the Office of Discipleship and Mission at (205)776-7186 or at akubik@bhmdiocese.org. At the Eucharistic Congress, Bishop Baker will have a special commissioning as missionary disciples for all of those who are named.

Bishop Baker on Retirement, EC 2019

AL.COM - Catholic Bishop Robert J. Baker of Birmingham turned 75 on June 4, reaching mandatory retirement age, so he sent a letter this month to Pope Francis asking for his successor to be appointed.
Baker said he would expect an appointment in six months to a year.
“It’s gone fast,” Baker said of his 12 years leading the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham. “I’ve been blessed. It’s a great diocese. Even though it’s small, it has a big impact because of Mother Angelica establishing EWTN here. It’s the largest religious network in the world.”
Baker said he plans to stay in Birmingham in retirement.
“I’ll help out where needed,” he said. “I did what I set out to do. I’m satisfied the diocese is ready for a new man to take over.”
Baker has scheduled a big celebration called a Eucharistic Congress on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Legacy Arena to mark the 50th anniversary of the Diocese of Birmingham.
